What We Can Learn from an Atheist
Don Ruhl • Savage Street, Grants Pass, Oregon • May 6, In the year of our Lord, 2015
Prelude:
- I read an article in Answers magazine (July–September 2010, pages 26–28),
- in which the writer gleaned lessons from
- Penn Jillette, a world-famous magician.
- Mr. Jillette is also a bold atheist,
- who uses his bombastic nature and
- fearlessness before the public
- to argue against belief in God.
- He does not go easy on anyone.
- While he is liberal,
- he does not hesitate to blast liberals when he disagrees with them.
- He does the same to us.
- However, the article referenced a short video that Penn Jillette made
- that might surprise you, and
- show us somethings that we need to consider as Christians
- in dealing with atheists and those like them.
- We have to avoid getting frustrated with them and
- remember how the Lord dealt with us, and
- remember His teachings on how to deal with people.
Persuasion:
- Go Back
- Did you miss an opportunity?
- Did you say something that you should not have said?
- Did you make a mistake?
- Once when my dermatologist cut something off my chest, and then
- cauterized it, although lying on my back
- the “aroma” came up into my nose.
- I said that it was interesting to smell my own flesh burning.
- He then said that I could tell my congregation as I preach
- that is what it would be like in hell, that is,
- you will be able to smell your own flesh burning.
- For some reason, I said, “That is what I preach.”
- Why did I make such a statement?
- Is that what I preach?
- I talked to his nurse at the next visit,
- explaining myself further,
- telling her what I do preach.
- I tried to make a connection with him and worship.
- He said he prays direct.
- Did you miss an opportunity?
- Compliment
- Why is it important to compliment people?
- It breaks down their defenses.
- It softens them up.
- Did the Lord ever compliment?
- Why is it important to compliment people?
- Be Patient and Respectful
- What does impatience and disrespect do?
- How do you want people to be with you?
- Be Bold
- If you go to them with doubts,
- they will walk all over you, and
- they will not listen to you.
- Why should they listen to you,
- if you are not even sure yourself?
- If you go to them with doubts,
- Be Sincere and Show You Care
- Is not the message of the Bible,
- which should also be our message,
- that God loves the world, and
- offered His Son Jesus Christ
- for everyone’s salvation?
- Let that come through your speech and actions.
- Is not the message of the Bible,
- Do Not Attack
- When someone attacks you,
- what do you do?
- You defend yourself.
- What will someone do whom you attack?
- He will defend himself.
- What then have we accomplished?
- When someone attacks you,
- Look Them in the Eyes
- What does looking a person in the eye convey?
- Make note of Mark’s comment
- as he prefaced what Jesus said to the rich young ruler,
21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him… (Mark 10.21).
- Looking at someone as you talk confirms what?
- as he prefaced what Jesus said to the rich young ruler,
- Talk to Them
- Engage in conversation.
- We believe we have the superior knowledge, because
- we believe in God, but
- does that mean the atheist has nothing to offer?
- Be Christ-Like
- Did Jesus interrupt?
- How did Jesus conduct conversations?
- Let Your Light Shine
- No, you probably will not convert them on the spot.
- Perhaps you prepared the soil.
- You might have even gone further and
- planted a seed.
- Still someone else might have planted the seed, and
- now you are watering it.
Exhortation:
- Perhaps we can sum it up, saying,
- what kind of person would get your attention, and
- make you want to consider Christianity?
- Then put into place the Golden Rule,
31 “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise” (Luke 6.31).
- Also, we should not assume
- that people have no interest,
- unless they have already said so.
