Prelude

  1. Should we like what Jesus liked?
    1. What does it mean that we are His disciples?
    2. He is our Teacher.
      1. Therefore, we want to know His material.
      2. Where did He get His teaching material?
  2. I researched this and
    1. it seems that the consensus is
    2. He quoted from the Book of Deuteronomy more than any other.
  3. Jesus quoted twenty-four Old Testament Books, and
    1. one Book stands out as His most quoted,
    2. The Book of Deuteronomy.

Persuasion

  1. What Is the Book of Deuteronomy?
    1. Its name comes from two Greek words.
      1. Deutero, meaning two or second, and
      2. Nomos, meaning law.
        1. Deuteronomy is the second giving or second reading of the Law.
        2. The time in the wilderness was almost over, but
          1. Moses would not join Israel in the Land of Canaan.
          2. Therefore, He recounted to them
            1. their history and
            2. what God wanted them to know and to do.
  2. Matthew
    1. Let me show you from Matthew only, how much He quoted Deuteronomy.
      1. Matthew 5.31 (Deu 24.1)
      2. Matthew 5.33 (Deu 5.11, 23.23)
      3. Matthew 5.38 (Deu 19.21)
      4. Matthew 15.4 (Deu 5.16)
      5. Matthew 18.16 (Deu 17.6; 19.15)
      6. Matthew 19.7, 8 (Deu 24.1, 3)
      7. Matthew19.18, 19a (Deu 5. 16–20)
      8. Matthew 22.37 (Deu 6.5)
    2. Now, let us examine three of them from Matthew 4.
      1. Matthew 4.4 (Deu 8.3)
      2. Matthew 4.7 (Deu 6.16)
      3. Matthew 4.10 (Deu 6.13)
