The Pain of Verbal Persecution

Some people treat verbal persecution as though it is not that bad, since physical persecution is worse. However, persecution is persecution and the Lord considers verbal persecution of His saints evil, and something for which He will recompense the persecutors.

Jeremiah spoke of the verbal persecution heaped upon him, saying to the Lord, “For I heard many mocking: ‘Fear on every side!’ ‘Report,’ they say, ‘and we will report it!’ All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying, ‘Perhaps he can be induced; then we will prevail against him, and we will take our revenge on him” (Jeremiah 20.10).

The prophet considered verbal persecution against him to be painful, and I do not think anyone wants to tell Jeremiah that his persecution was nothing. DR

Do Not Be Ashamed

Paul had to remind Timothy to stir up the gift of God within him (2 Timothy 1.6–7), and so he should not be ashamed of the good that God has done for us, “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began” (2 Timothy 1.8–9).

God saved us. That is the best news that we have ever heard or ever will hear! This plan He has had since before time began! Therefore do not be ashamed of Him! DR
