What Is the Sin Leading to Death?

Don Ruhl • Savage Street, Grants Pass, Oregon • April 22, In the year of our Lord, 2015

  1. The Text

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death (1Jo 5.16–17).
  2. The Context

14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. 16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death (1Jo 5.14–17).
  3. Why Did John Bring Up Sin Leading to Death?
    1. He wanted to show the confidence we have in the Lord,
      1. demonstrated through prayer,
      2. that we can ask him anything, and
        1. He will hear us.
        2. We know that if the Lord hears us on whatever matter we ask,
          1. we have that petition granted to us.
          2. The question is: Is this as wide-open as John seems to indicate?
    2. Yes and no.
      1. Yes, it is more wide-open than we may realize.
        1. We can pray for anything within God’s will.
        2. Do we truly pray as we ought to pray?
      2. No, we cannot ask God to violate His will.
        1. Can we ask God to give life to someone
        2. committing sin that leads to death?
          1. Think about it.
          2. Sin leads to death,

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom 6.23).

            1. What is the exception to this rule?
            2. When someone repents.
              1. However, if someone does not repent,
              2. they shall die in their sins.
                1. Should we ask God to change His law
                2. for this person, who may be a favorite of ours?
      3. Romans 6.23 shows the new natural and spiritual law
        1. since Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree.
        2. Why should God make an exception to it?
          1. Truly, we have an exception, but
          2. only through Jesus Christ.
    3. God’s law remains intact for every human, and it has always been this way:
      1. You sin, you die.
      2. You repent, you live.
  4. Sin Leading to Death and Sin Not Leading to Death
    1. Most people want to run first to the Gospels
      1. when Jesus spoke of blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
      2. Why would people think that blaspheming the Holy Spirit is the sin leading to death.
    2. Others want to find a specific, such as
      1. murder,
      2. suicide, and
      3. others.
    3. However, can’t any sin lead to death?
      1. Any sin leads to death.
      2. What sin could possibly not lead to death?
        1. The sin of which we repent!
        2. Therefore, sin that leads to death
          1. is sin from which we do not repent.
          2. If it is true that the wages of sin is death,
            1. how can it be that there is sin not leading to death?
            2. Are there any humans who will make it to heaven?
              1. Yes, but how is that possible?
              2. Have not all sinned and fall short of God’s glory?
                1. That is the story of Jesus Christ and grace.
                2. Jesus makes it possible for us sinners to find forgiveness.
  5. However, let us not forget the point of this context.
    1. Find out what the will of God is.
    2. Then pray with boldness on those things without ceasing.
      1. If the only thing we do with this text is
      2. figure out the meaning of the sin leading to death,
        1. then we have missed the reason for which
        2. the Holy Spirit included it in the Scriptures.
