The Direct Operation of the Spirit
Don Ruhl • Savage Street, Grants Pass, Oregon • December 13, In the year of our Lord, 2015
- What Is the Direct Operation of the Holy Spirit?
- The direct operation of the Holy Spirit is
- the claim of continuous revelation.
- Catholics, Mormons, Moonies, et al., all make this claim.
- Many of these denominations admit freely
- that the Bible is insufficient as the source of divine revelation.
- The direct operation of the Holy Spirit is
- the claim of special insight or understanding in the Scriptures, and
- that it is impossible to understand the Scriptures without it.
- The direct operation of the Holy Spirit is
- the claim that the Holy Spirit gives faith before hearing the truth.
- People believe that the Holy Spirit gives a person faith
- that he may desire the truth.
- They claim that a person will not accept the truth
- unless the Holy Spirit creates faith in the heart of the sinner and
- that faith is not an exercise of the human will, but
- strictly of the Spirit’s will.
- the claim that the Holy Spirit gives faith before hearing the truth.
- The direct operation of the Holy Spirit is
- the claim that feelings share equally in authority with the Word of God,
- in some cases greater than the Bible.
- Feeling good is put before doing good;
- instead of feeling good for having done good (cf. Acts 8.39).
- They believe you should accept feelings
- even if those feelings contradict the Scriptures.
- The direct operation of the Holy Spirit is

- Mark 16.15–16
- Could fruit be produced?
- Gal 5.16–26
- Could conversion take place?
- The Spirit uses the written Word as the source for salvation.
- Denies the authority of the Scriptures
- The right feelings are essential to true Christianity (Rom 14.17).
- Feelings are not authoritative,
- especially over the Word of God, and
- feelings may be wrong.
- 1Ki 22.19–24
- Jdg 16.20
- Job 4.12–16
- Yet 42.7
- Jer 23.23–32

- Luke 10.26
- Denies personal responsibility for being lost
- Those teaching the direct operation also teach
- that a sinner cannot be saved until
- the Holy Spirit works directly on the sinner’s heart.
- However, all people are not saved.
- Therefore, the conclusion would be it is the Spirit’s will.
- But God wants all people to be saved:
- 1Ti 2.3–4
- 2Pe 3.9
- So the responsibility for a person being lost is not the Spirit’s fault,
- He has done everything possible to bring salvation,
- except force it upon people,
- making the responsible party the sinner.
- Those teaching the direct operation also teach
- Denies the completeness of the Scriptures
- How the Holy Spirit Operates
- He works through providence.
- He works on Christians as they allow His Word to fill their lives.
- 2Pe 1.2–3
- Through knowing Jesus Christ fully,
- we have grace and peace multiplied.
- We do not experience these qualities,
- until we gain a thorough knowledge of Christ.
- We gain that knowledge through the Scriptures.
- The Holy Spirit gave the knowledge of the Scriptures.
- 2Pe 1.21
- He works through the preaching of the Word.
- Acts 2
- Acts 8
- Acts 10
- Acts 15.7–9
- The Holy Spirit gave the knowledge of the Scriptures.
- Preaching or reading the Spirit’s word produces faith – Rom 10.17
- Jesus did not give the Great Commission to the Holy Spirit, but

- If you ask how eye surgery is performed,
- you will get an explanation of lasers.
- Ask who did it, you will be told the doctor’s name.
- It was not the laser alone, nor
- the doctor without an instrument.
- So, the Spirit acts through an instrument
- to convert a sinner or strengthen the Christian.
