From Moses to Christ
Don Ruhl • Savage Street, Grants Pass, Oregon • June 10, In the year of our Lord, 2018
Scripture Reader and Reading: Phil Joseph – Genesis 3.19–25
Song Leader and Song Suggestions: Larry Amberg – Before the sermon: “Tell Me the Story of Jesus” (622) for all of the sermons I am doing in this series
Prelude:
- The Mosaic Age
- Began when Moses was in his 80s
- Ended with the death of Jesus
- Three periods of Bible or world history:
- The Patriarchal Age, covering the time from Adam to Moses
- The Mosaic Age, covering the time from Moses to Christ
- The Christian Age, covering the time from Christ to the present.
- Last Lord’s Day ➨ The Patriarchal Age.
- Ended with Israel fleeing Egypt
- Pharaoh ordered the children of Israel to leave
- Egyptians experienced ten national plagues
- Destroyed the Egyptian economy
- Lost all their firstborn in the last plague
- Today we will see these people and events:
- Israel in the Wilderness
- Israel at Mount Sinai
- The Tabernacle
- Israel in the Land of Canaan
- Israel’s Judges
- Israel’s Kings
- Israel’s Divided Kingdom
- Israel’s Prophets
- Birth of Jesus
- Ministry of Jesus
- Israel left Egypt, Pharaoh hardened his heart
- Pursued the Israelites
- When Israel saw the Egyptians, they feared greatly.
- However, Moses said to the people:
13 “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever” (Exodus 14.13).
- God divided the waters
- However, Moses said to the people:
- Egyptian army destroyed as they tried to follow
- Moses and Israel sang a song celebrating their victory
- Miriam, the sister of Moses, led the women in a song
- Their freedom from slavery
- symbolizes our freedom from the slavery of sin
Persuasion:
- Israel in the Wilderness
- Over 3.5 million people entered the wilderness for 40 years
- God took care of them
- They complained and rebelled often during those years
- Israel at Mount Sinai
- Here God gave Israel their special Law.
- Moses went up to the top of the mountain and met with God.
- There Moses received the Ten Commandments,
- written by God Himself:
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image…
7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…
12 “Honor your father and your mother…
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s…”
(Exodus 20.2–17).
- Below Israel was already violating the first and second commandments
- By worshiping a golden calf.
- Moses had it ground into powder,
- poured on it their water supply, and
- made them drink it.
- 3,000 refused to repent and died by the sword.
- God had Moses go back up the mountain
- he received another set of the Ten Commandments, because
- Moses had through down the tablets of the first ones
- Now we have the New Testament of Jesus Christ, for
- He leads us out of the slavery of sin.
- The Tabernacle
- First structure that God ordered built for worship
- Twelve tribes of Israel camped around the tabernacle
- Pillar of fire at night
- Pillar of a cloud during the day
- The Israelites provided freely for the construction of the tabernacle.
- Three pieces of furniture in The Holy Place:
- Altar of Incense
- Golden Lampstand
- Table of Showbread
- The Holy of Holies housed the Ark of the Lord, Ark of the Covenant
- Altar of burnt offerings out front
- The priests washed in water before entering the tabernacle
- Now we wash in the blood of Jesus
- before entering His house, the church, which is His spiritual body
- Tabernacle was not enough
- They had to obey
- One time when they rebelled against God,
- He sent fiery serpents
- Saved by looking to a bronze serpent
- Moses had made.
- This is the basis of John 3.16.
- Israel in the Land of Canaan
- They entered 40 years after leaving Egypt
- After Moses died, Joshua became leader
- Sent spies to Jericho
- Rahab, a resident there, hid the spies.
- Israel then entered the land after the spies report,
24 And they said to Joshua, “Truly the LORD has delivered all the land into our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of the country are fainthearted because of us” (Joshua 2.24).
- The priests led the way,
- carrying the Ark across the Jordan and
- the waters divided, even during flood stage.
- Israel’s Judges
- Over 300 years of judges
- No centralized government
- The last judge was Samuel
- Israel’s Kings
- Samuel anointed Saul as the first king
- He started out great
- In time, his humility grew into arrogance
23 “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
He also has rejected you from being king.”
(1 Samuel 15.23)
- God sent Samuel to anoint David as the next king
- Initially Samuel was impressed with David’s brothers
- However, the Lord revealed something to Samuel:
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16.7)
- David became popular with the people; but Saul was jealous
- After Saul reigned for 40 years,
- David reigned for 40 years.
- After David’s 40-year reign, his son, Solomon, reigned for 40 years.
- It was Solomon who built the temple
- Samuel anointed Saul as the first king
- VII.Israel’s Divided Kingdom
- Upon Solomon’s death, Israel divided
- 10 tribes formed Israel in the north
- 2 tribes formed Judah in the south
- The new king of Israel in the north
- feared the 10 tribes returning to Rehoboam, Solomon’s son.
- Therefore, Jeroboam set up a false religious system.
- Upon Solomon’s death, Israel divided
- VIII.Israel’s Prophets
- God used preachers known as prophets to bring the people back to Him
- Many of their messages are in the last 17 Books of OT
- Isaiah is probably the most famous
- He gave many details of the coming Christ
- He showed something coming for all nations
2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days
That the mountain of the LORD’S house
Shall be established on the top of the mountains,
And shall be exalted above the hills;
And all nations shall flow to it.
(Isaiah 2.2)
- Birth of Jesus
- The many prophecies of the Christ began their fulfillment
31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS” (Luke 1.31).
- Although living in Nazareth up north,
- Caesar called for a census and
- everyone had to return to their birth place.
- Therefore, Joseph took the pregnant Mary and
- while in Bethlehem, Joseph’s hometown, Mary gave birth to Jesus
7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2.7).
- Angels announced the birth to shepherds
- A star led wise men to Jesus
- We know little of His early years, except:
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men (Luke 2.52).46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions (Luke 2.46).
- John the Baptist announced to Israel that their new king had arrived
- The many prophecies of the Christ began their fulfillment
- Ministry of Jesus
- About 30 years old
- Only person ever to obey the Law of Moses perfectly
- He submitted to John’s baptism
- John saw the Spirit descend upon Jesus
- John’s declaration
32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God” (John 1.32–34).
- He chose 12 men to train
- He performed miracles
- He preached as no one ever had before
- The common people loved Him
- The leaders were envious of Him
- He lived without sin
- Yet, He suffered for our sin
- He asked for the Father to forgive His executioners
- He died
- A soldier pierced His side and out came blood and water
