Read Passages Relevant to the Subject

  1. Do we get the whole counsel of God on a subject by reading passages that do not address that subject?
    1. If you want to know whether carrots provide any protein, should you read material about meat?
      1. If you want to know what nutrients carrots provide, what topic should you research at the library?
      2. Does the fact that meat provides protein negate the fact that carrots provide some protein also?
    2. Why can people not see this on Bible subjects?
  2. If we want to know what the Bible says on baptism and salvation, should we read passages on faith?
    1. What passages should we read?
    2. Should we not read the passages on baptism and salvation?

    Do Not Oversimplify Understanding the Scriptures

    1. We cannot assume that everything in Scripture is easy to understand.
      1. We have to learn how to understand Scripture even as we have to learn to understand other things in life.
      2. Are some things plain and simple in Scripture?
        1. Are some things plain and simple in a cookbook?
        2. If so, does that mean anyone can understand everything in recipe directions?
    2. Again, the Bible itself reveals that some things are hard to understand.
      1. 2Pe 3.16
      2. What passages or topics do you find difficult to understand?

Learn What Bible Passages Apply to Us

  1. Did God intend for all the Bible to apply to every generation?
    1. For example, should we build ark as Noah did?
      1. Explain your answer.
    2. Another example, should we obey Acts 2.38?
      1. Explain your answer.
  2. Knowing the difference between the Old and New Testaments helps to know what to apply.
    1. Rom 7.1–7
    2. Does this mean we should have nothing to do with the Old Testament or narratives that predate it, such as the one about Noah?
